Tony lived in L.A. and was part of a gang to survive. He wanted to get out but didn't know how to. As an underprivileged youth, he partook in Camp New Horizons in New York, paid for by the government. he's from a street gang called vato locos. (crazy dudes) he fought another camper named riff in the lunch room .for calling him a racist term .

Tony starts the film as a typical tough guy, but an inner side is revealed that is much less macho. This is the flip side of Marcia, who begins quite feminine and pure and is revealed to be much tougher and less pristine.
